Cabins Project

Home Away from Home

This project has been a win-win for the Kansas Wildscape Foundation and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP).

Started in 2002 by a $50K grant from the Country Stampede, Wildscape was able to combine the grant with a $400K bank loan and purchase the first 11 cabins of the project with additional financial support provided by the late Bud Walker.  The first several cabins were “kit” cabins purchased from a retailer. After that, through a partnership between Wildscape, KDWP, Greenbush and the Kansas Department of Corrections, the cabins project transitioned into an inmate training program and new cabins were built by inmates at the Hutchison, Ellsworth and Norton Correctional Facilities. Inmates who participated on the cabin construction teams were trained to become certified electricians, carpenters, plumbers, etc.

Wildscape-funded cabins have been met with an overwhelming occupancy rate, and Wildscape is extremely proud that NO TAXPAYER DOLLARS were used to fund the construction of these cabins.  Not only do these cabins create a unique opportunity for friends and families to get outdoors with all of the luxuries of home, the project has also proven to be a significant source of income for KDWP. To date, Wildscape has placed more than 70 cabins at Kansas state parks and public lands that are now generating over $1 Million in revenue for KDWP each year!

The project has been a win for Wildscape as these cabins attract more people into the outdoors and to Kansas’ valued state park network; a win for KDWP as a consistent revenue source, and A WIN FOR KANSANS by providing more places to stay off the beaten path throughout our great state at reasonable prices everyone can afford!

The pictures say it all. Great construction, great amenities (heat/AC, refrigerator, microwave, stove, etc.) and great locations. Just bring your own bedding and towels and you’ll be all set. Have a look for yourself!
